Project organization
Julio Cesar Prava
He organized this book site: the reading structure, the study layers, the tools and the links between the text, the notes and the sources. He is the organizer of BiblioVerse, where he also runs Ética Para Iniciantes, Política Para Iniciantes and the Guia de Argumentação pelos Animais.
The collection
A Journey Through Animal Ethics: From Basic to Advanced aims to offer, in texts that are accessible yet in-depth, an analysis of the many questions debated in the field of animal ethics from its beginnings to the present day. The 12 volumes were published in 2025, in open access, and their production was funded by the organization Animal Ethics. The original PDFs (in Portuguese) are available on the Senciência e Ética website.
How the site was made
- Original text preserved. The text of the 12 volumes was extracted from the PDFs and checked against the tables of contents: all 186 chapters, the 1,219 notes and the 1,198 references. This English edition is a complete translation of that text, made for this site; the Portuguese original is on the main site.
- Linked sources. Every citation in author (year) format becomes a link to the full reference in the volume. The links the author included to other volumes of the collection lead to the corresponding chapter on this site.
- Context. On the first mention of each author in a chapter, one click shows who the person is and what they argue, so readers can understand the role of the citation in the discussion.
- Study layers. Summaries, explanations for kids, analogies, arguments in logical form, questions and tools were written for this site, based on the text. They are always marked as study layers and can be hidden with “Original only”.
How to help
- Spread the word: share the texts, the tools and the Debunking page with anyone interested in ethics.
- Teach: use the chapters, the layers for kids and the quizzes in the classroom or in study groups. Everything is free.
- Correct: let us know about transcription errors, misplaced notes or study layers that don't reflect the text well.
- Support those who produce the knowledge: the collection was funded by the organization Animal Ethics, which welcomes donations and volunteers.
Corrections
If you find a transcription error, a misplaced note or a study layer that doesn't reflect the text well, write to BiblioVerse stating the volume, the chapter and the passage.
