How to use this book site
A quick guide to reading, studying and looking things up in the collection.
What it is
Questão de Ética is a philosophy outreach and education project focused on ethics and the question of sentience. This is the collection's book site. The collection A Journey Through Animal Ethics: From Basic to Advanced, by Luciano Carlos Cunha, has 12 volumes and 186 chapters. In texts that are both accessible and in-depth, it examines the questions debated in animal ethics from the field's beginnings to the present day. Here you can read the entire collection, in the original text, with features a PDF can't offer.
The original text and the study layers
Each chapter contains two things, always kept apart:
- Original text, marked with the “Original text” label: this is the author's text, without cuts or changes, with the footnotes and references.
- Study layers, marked as such: “Before you read” (in one sentence, for kids, analogy, the argument in logical form, debunking) and “Practice” (questions and a reflection). They were written for this site and are not part of the work.
If you want only the author's text, use the Original only button next to the chapter's table of contents. Your choice is saved.
Sources for everything
Note numbers take you to the author's note. The years in parentheses, as in “Singer (2004 [1975])”, open the full entry for the work cited. Author names underlined with dots show who the person is and what they argue, so you can understand the context of the citation. Technical terms marked the same way open the definition in the glossary.
Where to start
- A quick overview: Volume XII, The Essentials of Animal Ethics.
- From the beginning: Volume I, Discussing Speciesism, and then Volume II.
- By topic: the reading paths.
- To answer someone: Debunking objections.
Your progress and your highlights
Use “Mark as read” at the top of each chapter. To highlight or add a note, select a passage of the text. Everything shows up in My Journey and is saved only in this browser.
Listen, cite and print
At the top of each chapter there are buttons to listen to the text read aloud, copy the reference in ABNT or APA style, and print or save as PDF with the notes and sources.
